TREE SPARROW

May 6th ~ A Tree Sparrow has been spotted on and near Box #1.  Just hoping he decided to make it a home.

May 8th ~ The beginnings of what looks like a Tree Sparrow nest is appearing.  A lot of pine needles on the bottom of the box.

May 13th ~ The Tree Sparrows have made a wonderful nest of pine needles and feathers.  Hope all goes well for them.

BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE

May 5th ~ We have some sad news, upon checking Box #1, all six eggs were removed by a predator we believe to be a raccoon.  We have cleaned out Box #1 and are hoping for the return of a friendly species.

THE BEGINNING

Our adventure into monitoring Bluebird Boxes began on Sunday, March 18th, at 2:00 p.m.  Mr. Scott Parry, Raccoon Creek State Park  Bluebird Trails Coordinator and the Beaver County Coordinator for the Bluebird Society of PA visited Western Allegheny Community Library.  Mr. Parry provided an informative program on the Bluebirds.  He discussed their natural history, his experiences with monitoring Bluebird Trails and how we may attract Bluebirds to our area.

Afterwards, Mr. Parry helped us build two Bluebird Houses.  Parent/Caregivers supervised younger ones as we built houses.  Afterwards he demonstrated installing and maintaining a Bluebird House properly.  As a result we now have two Bluebird Boxes at Western Allegheny Community Library.
